At Tongarra Road Family Dental, we're always looking for ways to make your dental experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible. That's why we're excited to announce our new partnership with IPSS (Procedural Sedation Services), allowing us to offer IV sedation for eligible patients undergoing dental treatment.

What is IV Sedation?

IV sedation is a safe and effective option that helps you feel deeply relaxed throughout your dental procedure while remaining responsive to the dentist. Many patients remember very little of their treatment afterwards, making it an excellent choice for those who experience dental anxiety or require more complex procedures. If you've been putting off dental treatment because of fear or anxiety, this new service could make all the difference.

IV Sedation may be suitable if you:

- Feel nervous or anxious about visiting the dentist.

- Need longer or more complex dental treatment.

- Have a strong gag reflex.

- Have difficulty becoming numb with local anaesthetic alone.

- Prefer to feel more relaxed during your appointment.

  • Procedural sedation uses carefully administered medications to help you feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable during a medical or dental procedure. Depending on your needs, sedation can range from light relaxation to a deeper, sleep-like state.

  • No. General anaesthesia renders you fully unconscious and requires an anaesthetist to control your breathing. With procedural sedation, you remain in a lighter, relaxed state and breathe independently throughout. Recovery is typically quicker than general anaesthetic, with a different risk profile than general anaesthetic.

  • Most patients feel very sleepy and relaxed. You may drift in and out of awareness. Most people remember little or nothing of the procedure, which for many is a welcome relief — especially for lengthy or anxiety-provoking appointments.

  • Sedation may be recommended if you:
    - Feel anxious or distressed about your procedure
    - Have had difficulty tolerating procedures in the past
    - Are undergoing a procedure that may be uncomfortable or prolonged
    - Prefer a more relaxed and controlled experience
    Your suitability for sedation will be assessed individually to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you.

  • Examples include; severe sleep apnoea, significant heart/lung disease, high BMI, previous serious problems with anaesthesia/sedation, severe gastric reflux. We make individual assessments following booking, but speak with your GP before booking if you think sedation may be risky for you.

  • Typical medications used are:
    - Propofol – for sleep
    - Midazolam – for anxiety
    - Fentanyl – for pain
    - Dexamethasone – for inflammation and nausea
    These are commonly used, well-studied medications administered in controlled medical settings.
    The exact combination, and dosing, is tailored to your needs by your sedationist.

  • Our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible, our medications include a strong pain killer and anti-inflammatory, in addition your proceduralist will usually inject a local anaesthetic to the area they are working on.

  • Your sedation is billed separately to your procedure.
    Costs vary by procedure length and complexity.
    Before your procedure you will receive an estimated cost for review directly from IPSS.
    This payment is due prior to your procedure, and unexpected costs can arise due to your procedure needing to go longer than the booked time.
    For your convenience IPSS offer online payments using Debit/Credit card and Klarna.

  • Some patients may be able to claim a medicare rebate for their sedation services. You will receive an invoice with medicare item numbers and provider details in order to lodge your own claim.
    IPSS do not process medicare or private health insurance claims on your behalf.
